VERY RARE 58 CORVETTE RPO 684 H.D. BRAKE / SUSPENSION, FUEL INJECTION. SOLD $162,250 ON BAT
THIS IS ONE OF ONLY 144 CORVETTES MADE IN 1958 WITH THE SPECIAL RPO 684 OPTION OF HEAVY DUTY BRAKES AND SUSPENSION. THIS OPTION WAS OFFERED FROM CHEVROLET TO THE ENTHUSIST THAT WANTED TO ''RACE'' HIS CORVETTE IN SCCA ROAD RACE EVENTS.
THE CAR WAS SPECIAL ORDERED BY PETER TRENOR STANLEY AT WASHBURN CHEVROLET, IN SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA. The car was manufactured on December 23, 1957. with the following options.

1958 CORVETTES WERE THE FIRST YEAR OF DUEL HEADLIGHTS. 9168 CARS WERE MADE TOTAL, AND THE ONLY YEAR WITH THE WASHBOARD HOOD, AND TRUNK SPEARS .
THE H.D.RPO #684 OPTION included special front and rear springs and shock absorbers, heavier front stabilizer bar, quick steering adapter, metallic brakes, finned brake drums, screened brake backing plates and special front ''elephant ears'' and metal rear brake ducts to direct cool fresh air to the brakes.
The option had special ''elephant tusks'' under the front fenders to direct fresh cool air thru the open air rocker panels
Trenor Stanley purchased the car specifically to provide daily transportation and to participate in road racing. From March 1958 to late 1958 he entered the car in eight races (appeared in seven, and was a first in class at one). Courses raced were
Santa Barbara,
Pomona,
Riverside and
Hourglass (San Diego).
The car had a hard life , but was found to be very complete in 2005 by the current owner who did a body off restoration to the car to original condition. It has been judged NCRS TOP FLIGHT. A body off the frame restoration began in November 2008 and was completed in July 2014. The car has been presented for NCRS judging twice earning Top Flight honors November 1, 2014 in Arizona (score 95.8 points) and November 8, 2014 in Nipomo, CA (score 98 points). NEW AWARD RECEIVED 10-9-2022 First time judged by VCCA and it won First Place Junior Award, and best in class!

NOTE THE ROCKER PANEL AIR DUCTS. ONE WITH A COVER TO KEEP OUT CRITTERS WHEN THE CAR WAS FOUND. ONLY RPO 684 CARS IN 57 AND 58 AND EARLY 59 HAD THESE OPEN ROCKER PANELS. STANDARD CORVETTES HAD METAL BRACES IN THEM SO NO OPEN AIR DUCT PANELS. TO ''MAKE'' A RPO 684 ROCKER PANEL IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE AS FACTORY. LOOK CLOSE WHEN SEARCHING TO FIND THESE RARE CARS.
